ANNOUNCEMENT // REAGANS KIDS is delighted to announce an open call for submissions for its three upcoming issues, slated for individual release within the next calendar year: SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK & ROLL. We will stagger publication, but the three issues will be treated largely as a single collection and printed. We will be most excited to publish focused and thoughtful submissions that are especially mind-bending, heart-wrenching, intoxicating, or generally nice to look at. You may submit up to three (3) pieces of Fiction, Nonfiction, or Essays; up to seven (7) poems, and up to ten (10) pieces of visual art per theme. Please follow the electronic submission guidelines below.
SEX DRUGS AND ROCK & ROLL // Just as we aren’t the first generation in history to experience economic, political, or cultural disillusionment, neither are we the first to seek external solace and distraction from the holiest trinity of vices. However, as we ‘progress’ toward a broken capitalist system, an increased national military and police presence, fragmented interpersonal interactions, and the general waning of humanness in our everyday existence, SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK & ROLL take on slightly darker, or at least very different, connotations than just simply being ways to enjoy oneself. So what does that mean? How have drugs and drug economies — prescription or otherwise — been used, abused, enjoyed, prescribed, or shared in ways that differ from our parents? How have sexual relationships changed to accomodate new cultural beliefs and fears? Does Rock & Roll even exist anymore? We are interested in what you make of these things in 2012, whether you relate to them at all or whether they remind you of a culture that no longer is.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS JULY 1, 2012.
GENERAL // REAGANS KIDS accepts submissions year-round and aims for publication biannually. Each of our issues centers around a basic theme and we encourage artists to be creative in interpreting, experimenting with, and articulating that theme. We are looking for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art & multimedia from varying perspectives that incorporates intelligent and creative socio-cultural commentary, critical personal experience, general facemelting, or anything that could be considered ‘stickin it’. Very generally, we want to hear//see//taste//touch//feel polished work from anyone born during the Reagan years that has something interesting to say about our unique psycho-geographical location. We ask that all submissions be generally akin to the RK aesthetic [i.e., plz read our 'about' page before submitting your nature writing, unless it has to do with what happens in a meadow at dusk (everything)].
SUBMITTING // Please attach all clearly labeled submissions in ONE email, making sure to include your contact information, and mail to reaganskids@gmail.com, with the subject line “Submission – [Name].” Please take a little time to introduce your pieces and let us know which theme they pertain to. You can include a cover letter // love note if you like as well. We like those. All written submissions should be in a .doc or .rtf format (no pdfs plz). Music can be submitted in any format but will likely be converted to .mp3 or .wav for release. At this time we can not pay for publication (“recession” and all) but we also charge nothin’ to read and edit your heart out-pourings. Oh yeah, your heart outpourings will also be subject to editing. Contributors will receive hard copies, duh. Simultaneous submissions are fine but must be labeled accurately; if your work is accepted elsewhere please let us know immediately.
